Content Managed Websites
Joomla CMS with custom designed templates
Back in the early stages of my journey as a web designer, I was faced with the need to be able to develop a website that my clients could update themselves. At the time the two main contenders that I looked at were Wordpress and Joomla, both Open Source software that were free to download and develop.
I chose Joomla because it gave me the freedom to design my own templates. I never use commercial templates, my work is always original.
You would choose a CMS web design package if:
- Your site needs to be quite large
- The website is likely to grow and develop over time
- The site requires interactive features such as a search facility, a shopping cart
- You need a multilingual site
- You would like to be able to update it yourself
Update website content directly on the page
One of the biggest advantages Joomla offers you as the customer, is the ability to edit content directly on the page. With Wordpress you log into an admin system and have to find your way around it in order to make changes to the content.
With Joomla all you have to do is navigate to the page you want to edit and log in via the link provided with your username and password. Edit buttons will then appear on the page next to all the blocks of content. You can then click the relevant edit button to bring up the Joomla Editor, which allows you to make changes to the content. You can style text, insert images, upload images, add links, and much more all without leaving the page.
When you have made your changes, you can save and close the Editor, and the site is instantly updated.
